It was late on a Tuesday afternoon when Sarah Bigler stopped at a Target store in Indiana with her two young children.

She thought it would be a quick stop, but realized that the elderly woman in line ahead of her was paying for her items with coins.

“I was, at first, irritated and frustrated and thinking of my long day,” Bigler told CBS affiliate WTVR.

But then she noticed how the cashier, Ishmael Gilbert, was handling the situation and how her daughter, Eloise, was intently watching the interaction.

In a Facebook post that has since been shared over 25,000 times, Bigler described how Gilbert patiently helped the woman count her change and treated her with kindness.

“Never once did this employee huff, gruff or roll his eyes,” she wrote.

Gilbert told The Examiner that the woman was getting flustered as she was trying to pay.

“She was all worked up because the line was getting longer and she was moving so slow. She was shaking,” he said.

But the 19-year-old cashier said he just kept telling her she was fine.

“I treat everyone with the same respect and I get it back in return,” he said.

Bigler said she walked away feeling grateful for the experience.

“I realized I hadn’t been inconvenienced at all,” she wrote.

“My daughter was instead witnessing kindness and patience and being taught this valuable lesson by a complete stranger; furthermore, I realized that I too needed a refresher on this lesson.”
